The Barista National Championships happened in April 28th and May 1st, in the catogories of Brewers Cup, Latte Art, Coffee in Good Spirits and Cup Tasters. The event was organized by the BSCA (Brazilian Specialty Coffee Association), in the city of Varginha, country side of Minas Gerais. It was the first time in many years that the association coordinated the event - that used to be led by the ACBB – who used to organize it with mastery.
The event brought together baristas, spectators, judges and producers from various regions of the country, resulting in a very rich interaction between all stages of the coffee chain, from the producer to the final consumer.
Lucca´s team was very well represented by two baristas in the of Brewers Cup category and one in Coffee in Good Spirits category. After weeks of training with Georgia Franco.
One of the categories of the championship is Coffee In Good Spirits, a preparation of alcoholic drinks with coffee. Competitors should prepare two signature coffee drinks: one hot and one cold. In the final stage, the mission was to make a classic Irish Coffee drink. Juliano Lamur was the barista, and Lucca representative, in this category. He was a finalist and took the sixth place title home!
In the category Brewers Cup - preparation of filtered coffee - Lucca´s competitors were: Rafael Serato and Camila Franco. In this competition, the baristas were able to prepare their coffee and preparation method of choice to present the result to the sensorial judges. In this stage, both the sensorial attributes and brewing methods were considered.
Rafael Serato performed with a coffee from the Barinas farm and prepared it in the Pressca method. He described it as full bodied coffee with tropical fruits flavour.
Camila Franco competed using a microlot from the Forquilha do Rio farm, called Florada de Março, produced by Afonso Lacerda. The method used was Kalita Wave.
Camila was the champion of this category, taking the golden trophy home and a chance of competing in the World Championship in Budapest.
Camila and Rafael competed in the Brazilian Brewers Cup Championship organized by BSCA (Brazilian Specialty Coffee Association) in Varginha / MG. Camila was the Champion and will represent Brazil at the World Championship in Budapest – Hungary
